“Walking
through woods and meadows: how, where, when and why”
The
best way to protect the alpine natural environment is to promote the knowledge
of it both in the media and by favouring visits to natural resorts. This has to
be carried out in accordance with the rules and regulations protecting the
mountain environment. Following are some recommendations for those who make this
experience for the first time:
Refer to maps and specialised literature
describing the length and difficulty of the paths
Make sure that paths are open and accessible
Make sure your equipment and garments are adequate
and appropriate to the path chosen
Ask experts or residents for information on the
weather (the weather changes rapidly in the mountains)
Make provision for unexpected events, carry with
you extra equipment and be ready for possible alternative trails i
Inquire in advance whether huts and bivouacs are
open
Inquire about the timetables oflifts
Tell your hotel-keeper about the path you will
follow
In the case of difficult paths ask for the
assistance of alpine guides
Ask the local tourist office for illustrated
publications describing the features in terms of flora and fauna of the
mountain territory you will visit
Do
not risk altering the environment by getting offthe trails and stamping on flowers and herbs
Notify possible sources of danger and risk caused byinadequate maintenance of the paths
Do not leave trace of your hike, bring back any litter
andanything which is not part
of the natural environment
Inform foresters about any dangerous or polluting
material you found on your hike
Note and notify the office responsible about possible
inefficiencies or anyinadequate
signals you found on your hike
Do have maximum respect for animals and plants, also
for aggressive animals and poisonousplants
Share your comments/suggestions from the (very
important) viewpoint of the user, with respect to the excursion made (you
can send us a letter with your comments)
Avoid engine-driven means of transport, as far as
possible: prefer collective means of transport, either public or private
Avoid using bikes on hikers’ paths
Avoid using radios or walkmans (use headsets)
Be careful not to eat berries and especiallymushrooms
Be careful not to cause landslides, stone-falls, fires
Those
who will adopt these very simple recommendations will, by so doing, contribute to minimising problems to the alpine ecosystem.
